Murraya paniculata, commonly known as mock orange or orange jasmine, is a versatile evergreen shrub native to Southeast Asia. It belongs to the Rutaceae family and is prized for its aromatic white flowers and glossy green foliage, making it a popular choice for hedges, screens, and ornamental gardens.

In terms of size and growth habit, Murraya paniculata typically grows to a height of 2-4 meters (6-13 feet) with a spread of 1.5-3 meters (5-10 feet). It has a dense and bushy growth habit, forming a compact, rounded shape with age. This makes it ideal for hedging and screening purposes, providing both privacy and aesthetic appeal.

Mock orange thrives in warm, subtropical to tropical climates and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is adaptable to a variety of soil types but prefers well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Once established, it has good drought tolerance but benefits from regular watering during dry spells, especially when young.

Uses of Murraya paniculata are diverse. Its dense foliage and fragrant flowers make it an excellent choice for creating formal hedges or informal screens. It can also be used as a standalone specimen plant in gardens or as a potted plant for patios and courtyards. The fragrant flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, adding to its ornamental value.

Care for mock orange includes regular pruning to maintain its shape and promote dense growth. Pruning should be done after flowering to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy appearance. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

For planting a hedge with Murraya paniculata, space individual plants about 60-90 cm (2-3 feet) apart to encourage them to grow together and form a solid hedge. Prepare the soil by digging a trench slightly wider and deeper than the root ball of each plant. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility before planting. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to conserve moisture.

Mock orange is known for its moderate to fast growth rate, particularly in warm climates. With optimal conditions and regular maintenance, it can establish quickly, filling in gaps within a year or two to form a dense hedge.

The Sunshine Coast provides an ideal environment for Murraya paniculata due to its warm, subtropical climate. The mild winters and ample sunshine promote healthy growth and prolific flowering. Additionally, the coastal breezes help disperse pests and diseases, reducing the plant's susceptibility to common issues. These factors contribute to mock orange's popularity and success in gardens throughout the Sunshine Coast region.
